Trouble with particles

Hello I was trying to get the particle demo working and I can't seem to get the particles to appear on the screen.  The FlareEffect.fx file had some issues with it.  It fisrt gave me a issue with the pixel shader vesion wich was 1_1.  So I changed that to 2_0.  Then it gave me a an error sying the effect state 'PointSpriteEnable' is obsolete and can no longer be used.  So I tried commenting that out and the program ran but no particles came up on the screen.  Is there any thing I can do to get this to display the particles or a alternative to PointSpriteEnable that can get the demo working.  Thanks!

I wrote the particle system demo with XNA 3.1 when point sprites were still supported.

In XNA 4.0, you'd have to construct a billboard renderer (ideally just pushing 4 vertices into the primitive batch and letting the vertex shader do the billboarding), but I haven't yet gotten around to doing that.
